The VJC Debate Invitational was first held in 2003 and has since grown to become an established part of the secondary school debating calendar. Conceived as a pre-season tune-up for schools looking to win the national title in April, it features 10 of the top secondary school debating teams engaging in several rounds of intense competition. Over the years, the competition has given many well-known faces in the debating community their first foray into the world of competitive debating.
Each year, the VJC Debate Invitational strives to remain relevant by centering itself around a theme that engages the prevailing issues of the day. Last year, in view of the exciting developments in the American elections, the theme for the competition was America. This year, the competition will explore the theme of ASEAN. Teams will be required to be conversant with the changes currently taking place in ASEAN and to think critically about the organisation’s future role, development and relevance to the international community.
There will be a total of 5 rounds of competition – 3 preliminary rounds, the semi-finals, and the finals.
The VJC Invitational will be held over two weekends on the 28th of November and the 5th of December at 9am.
If you are keen to come down and watch the teams debate, please feel free to do so. Hope to see you there!

I tried using my digital camera to record the debate and it came out great, with one minor little glitch – i forgot to press the “record” button for the first speaker. Anyway, here’s the debate, minus the first prop. Raffles Institution won the debate against ACS(I).
