We are a non-profit volunteer-run organisation that aims to develop, nurture, and promote debating in Singapore. Together with our volunteers, we reach out to those who have not yet discovered debating, and to those who already love the sport. We help schools, teachers, coaches and students by organising competitions, running training programs and camps, and providing resources for them. We work with partners from all industries who are keen to use debates as a means to achieve their objectives.
MOE announced last month that sex and sexuality education is returning to schools – but the provision of this education is limited to 6 chosen external providers (Fei Yue Community Services, Cornerstone Community Services Centre, High Achievers Training Consultancy, Focus on the Family Singapore, Eka Training Group and Touch Youth). Schools are traditionally seen as responsible for holistic education of a young person – including moral values and sex education. However, this view has drawn criticism from people who have their own differing views on sexuality education. The heated debate on sex education was covered extensively in the local media over the last few months, and resulted in the “AWARE saga“.
Fellow debaters, sex and sexuality education is a very sensitive issue for Singaporeans, but it must be debated in order to see both sides of the coin. What is the best way to educate our youth (ie, yourselves!) on sex education – is it through the status quo (where schools use the above 6 external providers) or through parents (who bear ultimate responsibility for the development of their child, but may not always know how to provide sex education)? Let’s hear your views!
Dear Students, Coaches and Teachers,
The Debate Association (Singapore) is happy to announce that we will be conducting a two and a half day debate camp from Friday 18 June to Sunday 20 June 2010. The Camp will start at 9 a.m. on Friday and Saturday and at 1.30pm on Sunday and end at 5 p.m. for all 3 days.
The camp will target secondary school students who have no or little debating experience and are looking to be introduced to debates. Through the camp, we aim to:
* Introduce to participants debating and public speaking skills;
* Reinforce their argumentative, and thinking skills;
* Enrich young debaters through interaction with former national and international speakers who can be role models for their younger counterparts;
* Allow young debaters to network with like-minded students, and cultivate a strong debating fraternity within their age group.
The cost fee for the camp is S$100 per participant and covers administrative costs, training materials and lunch for Friday and Saturday.
The deadline for application is 12 June 2010. Should you have any queries, please feel free to email Jun Yi at junyi@debates.org.sg. Details on the programme will be distributed once students’ participation is finalized. We will also inform you of the venue by 5 June 2010.
