From Straits Times on Feb 26 2009:
3rd spot in world debate
SINGAPORE grabbed the third spot at a prestigious international debating competition held in Greece recently.
A team of five, comprising students from Raffles Institution and Raffles Junior College, represented Singapore at the 21st World Schools Debating Championships (WSDC) held in Athens from Feb 9 to 19.
They came in third out of 39 participating countries, an improvement over last year’s 10th place ranking. New Zealand and England took the top two spots this year.
Three speakers from the Singapore team also clinched the Best Individual Speaker Awards in the championships.
Teoh Ren Jie from Raffles Institution (Secondary), Anish Hazra and Lee Jia Wei from Raffles Institution (Junior College) came in 4th, 5th and 9th respectively as Best Individual Speaker.
This makes Singapore the best represented country on the list. England came in next, with three speakers ranked 6th, 7th and 10th.
The other members on the Singapore team were Benjamin Mak from Raffles Institution (Secondary) and Rachael Quah from Raffles Institution (Junior College).
WSDC is an English language international debating competition held annually for debaters aged between 14 and 19 years old.
Singapore has participated in it since its inception in 1995.
MOE has published an online article about Fuhua Secondary’s debate team, and their experience in the SSDC 2009 (co-organised by DA(S) and JG).
