DA(S) will be holding a full-day adjudicator training session on Saturday Jan 16th at Tampines Junior College (2 Tampines Avenue 9, Singapore 529564). The training session will begin at 10 am and end at 5pm. There will be a one-hour break for lunch, but lunch will not be provided for participants.
The training will be provided free of charge and all trainees will receive a certificate of completion. All trainees must volunteer to shadow adjudicate the prelim rounds at the SSDC2010 in order to receive the certificate of completion and be considered for future adjudication opportunities [exceptions will be granted on a case-by-case basis only]. The shadowing is compulsory, as a theoretical knowledge of adjudication is insufficient unless complemented with real-world training and shadowing of senior adjudicators.
If you would like to register for the camp, please fill in the form below. As capacity for the camp is limited by the number of senior adjudicators available, we encourage all interested participants to sign up early.
[Event registration form removed as the event has passed.]

Is there a minimum age to be a trainee? I’m only in my teens…

Hi Dylan – good question, and sorry I didn’t clarify this in the post itself. To be an adjudicator, you need to be at least JC1-aged (which is normally about 17). We would also prefer if you already have some competitive debate experience, because we will not be covering the basics of debate in our adjudicator training session.

Hi,
is it possible for an ex-adjudicator to attend this course as some form of a refresher? I last adjudicated in the 2007 JGs and stopped due to other committments. Now that my schedule has freed up, I am looking forward to getting back to adjudicating again.
Thanks.

Hi J,
The adjudicator training is definitely also open to ex-adjudicators (and adjudicators familiar with other debate formats). Just go ahead and register yourself for the camp. Thanks, and see you on the 16th!

Hi everybody,
I believe my last comment may have caused some confusion. The training session is open for anybody to attend, including ex-adjudicators and those familiar with other forms of debate. However, if you are indeed already an experienced adjudicator, you do not need to attend the camp again! This training session is meant only for first-time adjudicators.
Also, even if you do not have an extensive debate background, but are a working adult or in university, you are certainly allowed to attend the training and thereafter be a shadow for SSDC.
For exceptional trainees who perform well during the training evaluation at the end of the camp, we may choose to deploy them as “full” adjudicators after the first or second SSDC prelim round. This will also be subject to feedback from the senior adjudicators during the SSDC prelim rounds.
If you are not able to make it for any of the SSDC prelim rounds, you are still welcome to sign up and attend the camp (pending space constraints), but certificates of completion (and opportunities to adjudicate in future) will only be given to trainees who have shadow judged at SSDC.
