Youth Debate Open 2016 Results

Co-organised by Debate Association (Singapore) and the Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS) this year, the annual Youth Debate Open (YDO) aims to bring secondary school students from a wide range of debating backgrounds together in a friendly competitive environment.

After two very exciting days of debates where teams argued on topics such as whether hacktivism brought about more harm than good, and whether there should state involvement in marriage, here are the results from the Youth Debate Open 2016:

YDO 2016 Registration Still Open!

Debate Association (Singapore) is pleased to announce that we will be organising the Youth Debate Open (YDO) 2016 in partnership with the Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS) on 18th and 19th June.

One of the few open tournaments targeted at Secondary School students (and those of equivalent standard in Integrated Programme / International Schools), YDO is a great opportunity for those looking to debate with their friends from other institutions. Regardless of whether you debate with your school mates or not, each team can comprise three to four members.

This tournament is held in the Singapore Secondary Schools Debating Championships (SSSDC) format. If you have any queries, please

DA(S) June Camp 2016 Registration Opens!

Debate Association (Singapore) is pleased to open registration for our annual June Training Camps for Primary School students.

This year, we will be collaborating with SIM Discourse (the Debate and Current Affairs Club of the Singapore Institute of Management) and SIM Global Education to offer two concurrent camps:

-       For students who are newly interested in debating, the NEXUS camp provides a fun environment and engaging introduction to the activity;

-       The EXCELSIOR camp targets students who are already familiar with primary school debating, and who seek to build on their foundations.

The camps are open to students from Primary 4 to 6 inclusive. The camps will feature exciting masterclasses by well-known debaters from both the Tertiary debate circuit. In addition, both camps will provide students the opportunity to interact with experienced facilitators in small breakout groups, as well as test out their skills in a mini-tournament using the same format used at the national primary school debate championships – Wits & Words.

Please feel free to contact our Directors of Training, Muhammad Farhansyah ( and Ang Meng Leng ( should you have any queries.

DA(S)-ITE Debate Championships 2016 Results

Debate Association (Singapore) and ITE College organised the DA(S)-ITE Debate Championships 2016, held on 9 and 10 April 2016. The tournament was hosted by ITE College Central and supported by REACH.

We were happy to have Arthur Lee and Ernest Goh serve as Co-Chief Adjudicators for this tournament. Both of them were part of the WSDC Singapore Team that won the World Schools’ Debating Championships last year.

In our second year, we saw 32 teams from post-secondary institutions (Junior Colleges, ITE Colleges and Polytechnics) compete in preparation for the MOE-ACJC Intercollegiates and Inter-Polytechnic Debate Championships later in the year.

In the tournament, teams grappled with Singapore-centric issues, such as nationalizing public transport, pegging welfare to the attendance of Skillsfuture classes, and implementing a minimum wage in Singapore.

Raffles Institution emerged champions of the Gold Division, while Pioneer Junior College clinched victory in a close-fought battle for the title of champions of the Silver Division.

Debate Development Initiative Applications Now Open!

We are proud to announce that applications for the upcoming cycle of the Debate Development Initiative (DDI) is open!

Currently in its fifth cycle, the DDI is a rigorous training programme which provides developmental exposure and competition opportunities to its members; It targets upper secondary school students (as of 2016) with at least moderate debating experience, a humble learning attitude, and a passion for oratory.

Designed to complement the training programmes of various secondary schools, past cycles of the DDI have had much success to date. The DDI will provide students with:

  • Exposure to advanced content (e.g. international relations, economics) through masterclasses conducted by established local and international debaters;
  • Further development in argumentative and critical thinking skills through adjudicated practice debates during its training sessions;
  • An introduction to debate formats used at more senior levels, such as the British and Asian Parliamentary debate formats, to encourage flexibility in argumentation and style;
  • A sense of community by bringing together like-minded students from secondary schools across the circuit.

Priority will be accorded to students from schools without extensive financial and/or institutional support. Thus, students from schools in Division II and Division III of the Singapore Secondary Schools Debating Championships (SSSDCs) are strongly encouraged to apply. The deadline for applications is 2359hrs Friday, 18 March 2016interviews will be conducted thereafter for shortlisted applicants.
